Enhancing Road Safety: A Commitment to Vision Zero with a $46.6m budget

Enhancing Road safety remains a pressing concern worldwide, prompting governments and stakeholders to take decisive action.

To address these concerns, the Australian Government has introduced the National Road Safety Action Grants Program (NRSAGP) to address critical road safety challenges and support the overarching goal of Vision Zero.

This comprehensive program, accompanied by sustained investment in infrastructure upgrades and treatments, underscores the government’s commitment to creating safer roads for all.

The National Road Safety Action Grants Program:

The NRSAGP has been specifically designed to support the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 and the National Road Safety Action Plan 2023-25. With a budget of $43.6 million over four years starting from 2022-23, the program focuses on critical areas such as data collection, community education, First Nations road safety, vulnerable road users, technology, innovation, and research. By addressing these priority areas, the NRSAGP aims to empower Australians in their journey towards Vision Zero.

Collaboration and Key Priorities for Enhancing Road Safety:

Transport ministers from each state and territory, along with the Australian Local Government Association, have united to endorse the Action Plan, which encompasses over 70 key actions. These actions encompass nine priority areas crucial to the success of the plan: data, research, infrastructure planning and investment, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, regional and remote road safety, vehicle safety, heavy vehicle safety, workplace road safety, vulnerable road users, and risky road use. By focusing on these key areas, the government aims to create a comprehensive and multi-faceted approach to road safety.

Investment in Data and Infrastructure:

Recognising the significance of accurate and accessible data, the Australian Government is investing $18.9 million over three years starting from 2023-24 to procure road safety data and facilitate research and evaluation projects. This investment will pave the way for improved data quality and enhanced decision-making processes, strengthening road safety measures in the country.

Continued Funding and Life-saving Upgrades:

Building upon the success of the Road Safety Program, which has delivered 1400 projects to date, the Australian Government is committed to funding the program through 2023-24 and 2024-25. Over $976 million will be invested in new infrastructure upgrades and treatments, emphasising the government’s dedication to implementing life-saving measures that address road safety concerns.
