Subject to environmental approvals, Mt Carbine waste dumps in Far North Queensland will soon be yielding tungsten concentrate, one of the world’s critical minerals, by making use of XRT Sorting advanced technology processing methods. 

The Mt Carbine deposit is largely unexplored, after being a major producer of tungsten in the 19870’s and ’80s, and was purchased by EQ Resources in June 2019. EQ, formerly Specialty Metals International Ltd, has partnered with German-based CROMINET to extract the metal with an aim to become one of Australia’s prime tungsten producers.  

CROMINET has contributed by upgrading and recommissioning the tungsten processing plant on site, expanding to 300K tonnes per annum (TPA) capacity. Pilot ‘sensor-based sorting technology’ offers a greatly increased upgrade of feedstock for the plant with purchase orders for road base and aggregates from the by-product supplying extra revenue. 

The waste dump yield is expected to reach 1 million tonnes per annum, which will add to the high-grade tungsten envelopes the company’s geological team has identified over a 1.2km strike from historical assay results and the ‘evaluation of underground development of narrow high-grade mine to extract ‘King-Vein’ style mineralisation’.

EQ’s partner in the Mt Carbine project, CROMINET, are specialist in obtaining high-quality products from recyclable metallic materials. They use a variety of techniques to work with scrap metal and drilling, metal, and industrial sludge for the benefit of producers and users. Their expertise covers pure metals, ferroalloys, processed steel, scrap metal to superalloy scrap. They are also system providers of specialty metals.

As well as the focus on becoming a top 3 tungsten producer, outside China, EQ Resources owns gold exploration licenses in New South Wales, namely Panama Hat near Broken Hill and Crow Mountain in the north of the state which covers a significant strike length of the Peel Fault.
