Newman, Western Australia is located at the eastern edge of the Hamersley Plateau at the headwaters of the Fortescue River. The town of Newman was constructed during 1967-69 by the Mount Newman Mining Company Proprietary Ltd. It is one of the towns in the East Pilbara local government authority and lies in the biogeographic region, of a montane desert landscape nestled between the ephemeral Fortescue and Ashburton Rivers. Vegetation in the region is dominated by Acacia shrublands and spinifex grasslands. The region annually receives ~300 mm of precipitation, mainly during the summer months. Wetter conditions in northwestern Australia prevailed in the past; between 46 and 36 ka regional conditions were likely colder but wetter than today due to a stronger-than-modern Indo-Australian monsoon cycle.
