Dust Suppression System – Excessive dust can affect the health of people and the state of property or business. It also presents risks to safety due to decreased visibility in trafficable areas.

Some sources of dust are:

  • Vehicle and equipment movements on unsurfaced trafficable areas;
  • Earthmoving vehicles and equipment during construction;
  • Wind activity on exposed soils and stockpiles; and
  • Materials handling, conveyance, and transport.

Even if used properly, many chemically based dust suppression system cause soil, surface or ground water pollution. Hence why there are other recommended measures that exclude the use of chemicals. Other options for dust suppression and mitigation include:

  • Reduced vehicle speed;
  • Vehicular traffic redirection;
  • Wind fences, barriers, and planted tree lines, limiting the spreading of dust. (However, the problem of decreased visibility on working sites or in traffic is not solved with these dust suppression systems);
  • Ground vegetation– this is good solution for only non-trafficked areas; and
  • Permanent paving or temporary non-erodible ground covering, such as mats or planking; these dust suppression systems are quite expensive and thus rarely justified.

Due to negative effects of conventional chemical dust suppression system, recommendations are that they should not be applied near surface waters, including bridges, culverts, wetlands, and near wells or drainage tile inlets.

Watering is still one of the most commonly applied dust suppression systems. However in extreme conditions, the ineffectiveness of water application cannot be ignored. Excessive watering also exacerbates the issue of sediment runoff.

Vegetable oils and starches may cause oxygen depletion in water and soil, posing adverse effects on vegetation and wildlife.

Petroleum oils and bitumen may cause oxygen depletion, ammonia, dissolved salts (especially sulfate), and heavy metals in water bodies.

Lignosulfates and wood pulping liquors have reduced effectiveness after heavy rain. They also have adverse effects on vegetation. When present in water, they cause oxygen depletion, acidity/corrosivity, and the occurrence of ammonia, phenols, chloride, sodium, sulfate, and heavy metals. These dust suppressants may also cause foaming and discoloration in surface water.

Salts and brines have negative effects on vegetation and wildlife. When present in water, they cause oxygen depletion, and occurrence of cyanides, dissolved salts, and heavy metals.

Dust suppression system other than application of chemicals are in most cases not sufficiently effective. On the other hand, application of traditional dust suppressants is not preferred in many situations due to their numerous negative effects on the environment.

Global Road Technology solved this issue by inventing dust control products that are environmentally sensitive and friendly. Additionally, they are not easily leached away as common suppressants are, prolonging their effectiveness. When it comes to application on trafficable areas, GRT agents contribute to road stability since they act by binding soil particles together. GRT suppressants form non-slippery and flat surfaces. Treatment with GRT dust control products are competitive with alternate surface treatments such as chip seals.

Common dust suppressants are usually not applicable to stockpiles since they change the properties of the materials. Global Road Technology has solution for this issue as well; GRT5000 Dust Control Solution can be applied directly to raw materials using existing overhead spray bar systems or water trucks with spray bars, side fans, or water cannons. For example, in the coal industry, the product prevents the loss of materials whilst not altering the burning properties of coal. It solves the problem of dust when pulverized minerals and/or coals are shipped across country in coal cars or trucks. GRT5000 can cost as little as 4.5 cents per tonne. It provides long life protection across wet and dry climates and temperature extremes. As with all other GRT products, GRT5000 is also nontoxic.
